RUN FOR OFFICE!
How long have you been a FARC member? Do you enjoy attending FARC races and other events? Here's your opportunity to get "behind the scenes" with FARC and get even more enjoyment out of your membership. FARC is seeking nominees to the Executive Board. This club is all volunteer, and it takes people to put on as many events as we do. Let us know if you're interested by sending an email to webmaster@farcnj.com or by calling the hotline at 732-431-2627. We look forward to hearing from you.

HOLIDAY MEETING – TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3
Our annual holiday meeting will be held at Michael J. Tighe Park on Georgia Road in Freehold Townshi p on Tuesday, December 3. A 3 mile ‘full moon’ fun run starts off at 7:30 PM, followed by the meeting at 8 PM. Food and beverages will be provided. To make it more festive, we ask that people bring some kind of dessert goodie.  So bring your appetite and reconnect with your running friends. See you on the 3rd.

GET YOUR NEWSLETTER ON LINE
If you'd like to receive your FARC newsletter online, please send an email to Jim Bergum, our webmaster, at webmaster@farcnj.com and ask to be removed from the snail mail list and added to the email list.  By adding your name to the email distribution list, you will also get announcements, reminders for meetings, updates to the website, etc.

13th Annual Toys For Tots 5K

Linda Hyer will once again have the US Marines come down to happily cart off the thousands of dollars worth of toys for their annual charity drive.  Word has it that there will also be a rather jolly man walking around in a red suit. But this is a 5K event, which drew 300 participants last year. Show time is 10 AM at Michael J. Tighe Park on Georgia Road, Freehold Township. Look for the usual wide array of post race refreshments.

THANKS, FARC

Dear FARC,
I would like to thank you for the scholarship you awarded me earlier this spring. It will help me a lot in paying the many expenses that go with a secondary education. I will be attending Rowan University, where I plan on continuing my running career while balancing the workload of mechanical engineering.  Over the years I have enjoyed numerous races in both the summer and winter, my favorite being the Toys for Tots run in December. Everything is so well put together and everyone is so nice. Once again, I'd like to thank you for the scholarship and I look forward to running this summer.

Sincerely,
Chris Reed

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Club Members,
I want to thank everyone involved with the Summer Series 2002. You help bring the joy of running to my son (Victor 16) and daughter (Melissa 15). This was the first time we raced as a family. While we were warming
down and discussing the race, I felt enlighten that my children have grown up to love the sport of running.  One day they stand on the side line in their cage and the next time they are standing at the start line with me.  Time truly run's fast...only my 5K time get slower.

These days, being a parent has many challenges, as my loving wife (Donna) and I have faced many up hills, we have also seen our share of down hills.  Our family is blessed and we are thankful for our health and that of our children. Running is more then a forum for good health. It builds character, spirit and self respect. I am so proud that Victor and Melissa has learned that. Now they can help pass the torch to their younger brothers (Bryan 9, Cody 7).

Thank you again....see you on the Run.
Vic Vientos

SCHOLASTIC FARC

It’s been a fast cross country season for our harriers.  Placing high at the Shore Conference Championships on November 2 were Matt Forys (7th, 16:23), Victor Vientos (17th, 16:46) and James Coomber (24th, 17:00). On the girls side it was Laura Saffer taking 20th place with a 20:30. Laura had previously won the junior race at the Battle of Monmouth meet, where Matt Forys and James Coomber had finished 2-4 among the senior boys. Matt later won the Freehold Regional Championship with a 17:00, as James was second in 17:28. Laura was 5th at the regional meet with a 21:35.

The following members were included in the Transcript's All-Freehold Regional District Track and Field Teams last spring:

Laura Saffer, Manalapan H.S.    - 1,600 & 3,200 meters

Chris Reed, Freehold Twp. H.S. - 1,600 meter relay

Matt Forys, Howell H.S.              - 3,200 meters

Nutrition Quiz which of the following foods contains the most fiber:

a.       ½ cup of brown rice

b.       ½ cup of oatmeal

c.       ½ cup of whole wheat macaroni

d.       ½ cup of baked beans

Find the answer below.

18th Annual BORN TO RUN 5 Miler

It all started back on a late September day in 1985 with 150 runners standing out on Main Street in downtown Freehold waiting for the starting gun. Since then the race has been moved off of the main drag, but has grown to almost 900 runners (and walkers). The 18th edition will take place on the day after Thanksgiving, November 29, with registration at the Fire House next to the railroad tracks. Hank Bailey once again has it all ready, including the complimentary suds at the Court Jester. This year the event will surpass the $100,000 mark in donations to the Monmouth County Child Abuse Task Force.

MEMBER PROFILE -     Allison and Mike Halsey

Daughter and Father Team

Allison and Mike became involved with FARC last summer when father dragged daughter to the Sunday morning runs at the Manasquan Reservoir.

Both Halseys were excellent high school athletes and both successfully avoided running at that level. Mike was involved in football, baseball, and gymnastics and even earned a black belt in Karate!  Allison started her athletic career playing soccer, softball and gymnastics, but quickly gravitated toward basketball. Allison met success at the AAU, high school and Division II college levels. She was a point guard for the ultra-successful Red Bank Catholic HS girls basketball teams, winning Christmas Tourney Championships four straight years and multiple Shore Conference and State Championships!

Allison must have been a friendly competitor because an opposing team, which had beaten her team in the state AAU finals, invited her to join them in Louisiana for the AAU Nationals, where they finished 17th out of 70 teams!

While playing for the St. Anselm’s (New Hampshire) College basketball team, Allison was involved in various conditioning activities, including 6:30 AM gym workouts and a two mile running test. (Editor’s note: It’s kind of hard for Allison’s Sunday morning running buddies to believe that she really got up for 6:30 AM workouts.)

Once Allison’s collegiate basketball career ended, she looked for an athletic outlet. She found it with her friends at college, running through the snow and ice surrounding the college lake in New Hampshire.

Allison enjoys running with her Dad at the reservoir and racing at the Battlefield State Park, Lake Tak, and Wall Twp. summer series.

Although Allison and Mike don’t stay together during races, they encourage each other’s participation. It’s a father/daughter relationship that all families would love.

RUNNERS FORUM

Lehigh Valley River Relay Run July 21, 2002

 --Walt Rutsky

The FARC Running Buds participated for their second year in a row in the Lehigh Valley River Relay Run. This was the 12th running of this relay. The race starts in Allentown, Pa.’s Canal Park and finishes in Easton, Pa.’s Riverside Park. Six hundred and sixteen runners - ages 14 to 70 – competed in this year’s event. There were one hundred twenty-seven relay teams and 39 iron division runners from eight states.

Last year’s FARC team was entered as mixed masters. The same team could not compete together again this time. So a new team of Running Buds was assembled and competed in the men’s masters division. FARC club members Sue Patla, Bob Stoveken, Mark Leary, Walt Rutsky and John Leonard (names listed in leg sequence run) made up the team Since two females were needed to make up a mixed team, we penalized Sue by having her run with the rest of us guys on a men’s team. But if you know Sue, she runs quite well and did a great job.

Last year the team drove up the night before did a bit of partying the night the before. This year, the trip was strictly “business”; some may say monkey business. Well anyway, the Bud’s drove to the run the morning of the event wearing their race faces.  And, in spite of not staying the night before, the team had a great and fun time. The Bud’s finished 46th overall out of 117 teams that finished. The team time was 2:49:31 with a pace of 7:26/mile. We enjoyed the post race amenities in traditional Bud and fashion then departed.

The team saw fellow FARC member Dave Gross at the relay. Dave competed in the Iron Division and ran the entire 23-mile course on his own. Too bad more FARC members did not try this event either on a team or in the Iron Division.  Maybe next year?  By the way, next years race will be held on Sunday, July 20. Keep following the club WEB site for other team events.

 The Montville 5 K

By Robert McGill

One of the nicest races of the year was the Montville 5K.  It starts at 8 in the morning on a hilly course.  You register for the race in the library and the race starts across the street from the library.  If you have little kids, there is a carnival with many rides after the race.  The kids races are free.  That night, the Township of Montville has fireworks.  I ran a 22:34 in that race.  I know of one member from FARC at this race and that was Edward Adamsky.

Nice T-Shirt

By Robert McGill

The Sunset Classic gives you a nice gray polo type shirt with a collar and buttons.  It is the best
shirt going.  The only advertising says the Sunset Classic on the front.

Running Math

By Ralph Garfield

Problem 1: Jane and Jill run a 6 mile straight course A to B. Jane does 5 minute miles and starts from A. Jill runs 6 minute miles and starts from B. How far from A do they cross? When Jane reaches B she immediately turns around and heads for A. When Jill reaches A she immediately turns around and heads for B. How far from A do they cross now? Redo for one more loop.

Problem 2: Part 1, Jane runs 5 minute miles; Jill runs 6 minute miles-they start together to run a 6 mile race. When Jane finishes how far behind is Jill?

Part 2, Jane starts at 5 minute miles increasing uniformly to 6 minute miles over the 6 mile course; Jill starts at 6 minute miles increasing to 8 minute miles over the 6 mile course. How far behind is Jill when Jane finishes?

The answer to part 1 is 1 mile. The answer to part 2 is 1.153 miles.

Sunset Classic 5 Miler

By Robert McGill

On of the toughest races of the year was the Sunset Classic 5 Miler in Bloomfield.  It was pouring rain
and I have to thank the many volunteers who man the water stations during the rain.  There was also some
lightning and thunder.  I was unable to thank them during the race, because I was running on empty.  This
race has the best shirt around.  There was also plenty of food and drinks after the race.

The Christmas City Challenge 5 Miler

By Robert McGIll

If you want to have some torture and brutality, the race to do is the Christmas City Challenge 5 Miler.
It has plenty of hills.  Your first mile will be approximately 1 to 1 1/2 minutes faster than your last
mile.  Approximately half the course is on my favorite running material, concrete. During part of the last
mile after climbing the hill, you run by an old cemetery.  This is one of my favorite races.  For
further proof of how tough this course is, Laurie Gordon calls it brutal.

(Editors Note: if you’re looking for a tough race, or an easy one for that matter, call Bob.)

Two Rights Make A Wrong

By Robert McGill

I ran a 22:21 at the Aramark-Servicemaster 5K.  This is one of my fastest races of the year.  I had one
problem with this race.  I grabbed 2 sneakers when I left the house.  When I arrived at the race, I noticed
that I had 2 right foot sneakers.  I ended up running the race with 2 right foot sneakers.  There was no
pain in my legs or feet from doing this.  I think that I could have ran faster if I had one right foot
sneaker and one left foot sneaker.  This is the first time that I ever did this.  Just ask Dave, he noticed
that I had 2 right foot sneakers on.  The course was flat.

(Editors Note: thank you Bob for your great stories.)

PICKING UP THE CHANGE - Update

One Month To Go!!!!!!!!!!

Current Leaders: Tom Russell ($16.90), Fran Emanuel ($6.21), Avram Shapiro ($4.90), Jim Bergum ($2.00), and Janet Bergum ($1.11) are leading the pack in the Picking Up The Change program.

Tom Russell writes: June results: 60 miles; 3 quarters, 2 dimes, 2 nickels, 18 pennies ($1.23); and several other
goodies including an electronic Jeep key.  Most of the coins this month came from one run in new
territory for me, in a short stretch across the street from a school.  Good spot!

By the way, one of my favorite summertime running spots is the Toms River bridge across Barnegat Bay.
From the top of the bridge you can see for miles up and down the bay.  Also, it's a good place to go
prospecting!  Home-bound people driving across the bridge must try to throw coins into the bay for luck?
Early morning is best: almost no home-bound traffic. I hope to be there in late August or September.

The Road Change Program is an incentive to pick up change while running.  From December 1st 2001 to December 1st 2002 we want you to pick up money.  At the end of the month e-mail your monthly finding to our web master at
webmaster@farcnj.com where the running totals are kept.  You can view the current totals by going to www.farcnj.com and clicking on the FARC EVENTS page.  At the end of the year the person who accumulates the most road change will win a prize and everyone’s cash accumulated will be used to purchase gifts that will be donated at the Toys For Tots race.

Nutrition Quiz Answer – (d) Baked beans provide the most fiber, with 5 to 7 grams; the whole wheat macaroni provides 2.5 grams, the oatmeal provides 2 grams and the brown rice 1.5 grams.

SUMMER SERIES 2002

By Dick & Carolyn Heuser

We want to thank all the runners who participated in the Summer Series 5K at Monmouth Battlefield State Park.  We began participating in these races many years ago and enjoyed the camaraderie and informality of running on summer nights.  Because of the enjoyment we received, we agreed to be race directors for the past three years.  Each year we have tried to correct any mistakes or oversights from previous years.  It is a lot of work to perform the many tasks each week, from storing and trucking the equipment, marking the course, filling the water jugs, registration, race results, writing and sending results to the newspapers, and much more.  The thank-yous we’ve received from runners are much appreciated and are the only rewards we need.  The next time you’re at a well-run event, one with efficient registration, frequent water stations, and timely results, make sure you thank the volunteers for a job well done.  And we thank all those who have helped make these races run smoothly this summer:  the water & ice pop crew of Marie Saa, Teri Dunsheath, Lois Gross, Shelley Polay, Kathy Rutsky; finish line with Bob Hyer, Jack Lucey, Tom Wendel, Marcia Shapiro, Dick & Carolyn Heuser; registration with Avram Shapiro and Marie Saa; course, led by (once again) Hal Smith who keeps everyone from getting lost, Tom & Tim Dunsheath, Walt Rutsky, Kathy Kennedy, Gail Weitz; Lauren Hyer with awards; Renee Hyer who fills in wherever she_s needed; the kids’ race group of Linda Hyer, Mike O_Connell, Bob & Judy Waitt, Marcia Shapiro, Jack Lucey.  And I’m sure there are a few I’ve forgotten. Let us know who you are so we can properly thank you.

We apologize to those runners who were inconvenienced by having the July 3rd race cancelled.  As race directors, we had authority to cancel a race.  The decision was based on the predictions of the continued poor air quality and high temperatures with the heat index above 100 degrees.  It was an effort just to walk and maintain a normal breathing pattern.  We felt it would serve no purpose to have people running 3+ miles, especially when there were three other races that week in the area, including one the following morning in Wall Township.  This decision was reached independently by the club president and vice president.  The latter works outdoors for a living and is particularly aware of the effects of heat and air quality on the human body.  The park superintendent told us that the ranger on duty administers no first aid.

Thanks again to all the runners who have come week after week for the past three years.  We hope you enjoy many more years of healthy running.

 RACE RESULTS

 Frank Haviland Takes the Gold

Frank Haviland took the gold at the USAT&F masters championships in Maine in the 2000m steeplechase. His time was 8:29. Frank also took silver in the 800m with a time of 2:28.3. The meet was held at the University of Maine from August 8-11.

NOTE – THERE IS A LARGE BACKLOG OF RACE RESULTS AND ARTICLES. WE LOOK TO CATCH UP IN THE DECEMBER NEWSLETTER.

Vol. 20 No. 5 08/02

HELLO FROM THE PRESIDENT

By Dominique De Vito

As we vacillate between blistering heat and normal summer temperatures, running sure feels good on the days that aren't blistering! We had one of the blistering days for the Summer Series on July 3, and it was a brave bunch of folks who laced up and ran that evening. Fortunately the next week was much better, and our large crowds were back in force.

We've got something special lined up for the August membership meeting, which will be held on the date of a full moon - Thursday, August 22. We're having a full moon run AFTER the meeting, which will feature an astrologer to talk to us about the influence and effects of the moon on running and much more!

Our annual membership picnic is in August, too, so come party before school starts. Saturday, August 24th is the date, from 1 to 6 PM at our old Liberty Oak Park (now Michael J. Tighe) in Freehold Township. Come for the food, the beverages, the games (softball, relays, kids games), the music (with Stephano's band) and the socializing. Don't forget the bake off! And the cost is free. Call Pam (732-942-8518) to say you're coming.

***** NEXT FARC MEETING AUGUST 22 *******

The next FARC General Membership Meeting is Thursday, August 22. It's a special night with a special twist. We'll be having a Full Moon Run after the meeting, and the speaker for the meeting is an astrologer who will be telling us all about the power of the moon and how to use the moon for better health and well-being. The meeting will start at 8 pm, with the Full Moon Run starting at 9:30 and going through the park. Come dressed to run! Even if you can't make the run, come out to hear about the moon and other astrological matters, and do some socializing. The meeting is two days before the club picnic on the 24th. See you on the 22nd!

FARC Executive Board

President - Dominique De Vito (cddevito2@aol.com)

Executive Vice President - Linda Hyer

Executive Vice President - Dick Heuser

Treasurer - Mike O'Connell

Secretary - Avram Shapiro

Welcome to FARC - the club would like to welcome the following new members: the Higginson family (Ashley, John & Sophie), Stephanie Forti and David Kennis, all from Marlboro; Eileen Murphy from Red Bank; Cheryl Lynch from Howell; Coleen Feeney and Grace Hickey from Englishtown; Lucia Torres and Christa DeLucia from South Amboy; the Dovel family (John & Tyler), the Pfeffer family (Stephan, Susan, Larissa & Bryan), Teresa Taft, George Samaris, James Clarke, Jennifer Winitt and John Palladino, all from Freehold; Andrea Zimmerman from Old Bridge; and Jeffrey Green, James French, Debbie Darwick, the Maxham family (David, David and Mary) and the Privetera family (Deborah, Anthony & Nicolas) from Manalapan. Welcome one and all.

In The Mail - "Thanks, FARC"

Dear FARC Board,

On behalf of my family and myself, I'd like to thank you for your generosity. You all support a worthy cause of helping young men and women to start their college endeavors. Not only has the club helped me financially, but personally as well. The persistence, honesty, and pride the club has taught me through my years of involvement have collaborated to create the person I am today.

I would like to thank you one last time for your thoughtfulness. I am proud to have been a part of an organization that has as many thoughtful, kindhearted people as FARC. Thank you again for the years of involvement and the generous gift. Thank you!

Sincerely, Dave O'Brien (a FARC 2002 Scholarship Winner)

FARC's First Ever Race Cancellation

The Friday 5K For Women & One Mile Run

Bob Waitt had the one mile fun run participants on the starting line and marshals on the course. But a fast approaching storm, complete with impressive lightning bolts, forced a delay. When the torrential rain started, the lightning got closer and the clock ticked to 8 PM, which forced the cancellation of both races. Initial hopes of rescheduling the event were soon dashed due to problems with resetting the event logistics and the realities of a financial bloodbath.

It was the first time in FARC's 20 years history of over 500 running events that we had to cancel. (Note - on August 14, 1988, a summer series 5K was postponed one week due to lightning.)

All was not lost however. The extensive array of food and beverages were largely consumed. Press writer Bob Cullinane promised to be back next year. It took Q104.3 four hours to get to Marlboro, but they did get spin some tunes. The clown was a big hit. And the event did raise money and awareness for the Sandra M. Glazier Cancer Foundation.

Even without a race, so many thanks need to go out. Anne Walsh and Dr. Kenneth Nahum did so much enthusiastic work in helping to make this a quality event that a mere thank you here is not enough. Thanks too to the great planning and work by the usual core of dependable and knowledgeable FARC committee heads (Linda, Dick, Robin, Tom, Bo, Jack, Avram, Isabel, Walt, Barry, Marcia, Bob W, Don), plus the usual legion of club volunteers aided by Glazier Foundation volunteers. And thank you Marlboro Township and to all of our generous sponsors. Mark July 18, 2003 on your calendar for the 14th edition.

Upcoming Racing Events

The oldest race in western Monmouth County, the Race Against Hunger, will be held on Wednesday, August 14. This event, which benefits the Freehold soup kitchen, moves back to Monmouth Battlefield State Park. Also at Battlefield Park will be the new Walk With Joe 5K Run on September 14. This trail run/walk will honor Patrick 'Joe" Driscoll, was lost his life on flight 93 over Pennsylvania on 9/11/01.

Other events that the club is involved in: the Colalillo ShopRite 5K in Deer Path Park in Readington on September 22, benefiting the NORWESCAP food pantry in Flemington, the Bayshore Hospital 5K in Holmdel on September 29 and the Jersey Shore Half Marathon on October 6.

PICKING UP THE CHANGE - Update

Current Leaders: Tom Russell ($14.18), Fran Emanuel ($3.59), Avram Shapiro ($1.27), Jim Bergum ($1.15), and Janet Bergum ($0.47) are leading the pack in the Picking Up The Change program.

The Road Change Program is an incentive to pick up change while running. From December 1st 2001 to December 1st 2002 we want you to pick up money. At the end of the month e-mail your monthly finding to our web master at webmaster@farcnj.com where the running totals are kept. You can view the current totals by going to www.farcnj.com and clicking on the FARC EVENTS page. At the end of the year the person who accumulates the most road change will win a prize and everyone's cash accumulated will be used to purchase gifts that will be donated at the Toys For Tots race.

Nutrition Quiz Answer - a. the Egg McMuffin, which is lowest in fat with 11 grams. Hotcakes with sausage, including margarine and syrup, have 29 grams of fat. The scrambled eggs and hash browns have 17 grams of fat. Remember, the average person wants to eat about 65 grams or less of fat each day.

RACE CALENDAR

Vol. 20 No. 4 06/02

HELLO FROM THE PRESIDENT

By Dominique De Vito

It's not official yet since it's not June 21st, but as far as I'm concerned, it's summer. That means extended daylight hours in which to run, walk, bike, roller blade, swim, shoot hoops, play ball -- whatever your sport or activity of choice is. Speaking of play ball, the club has 10 tickets to see the Lakewood Blue Claws on Friday, June 14.The tickets are in a section just to the side of home plate. If you're interested, call Tom Wendel at 732-804-3952.

Of course the best activity is running, and if you haven't been to it yet, you'll want to catch the FARC summer series of 5K and kids' races. It starts on June 26 and goes every Wednesday evening for seven weeks, through August 7. The series is celebrating its 20th year this year!! Share in the tradition of the series and try to make some history of your own with improved records week to week. The kids' races start at 6:30 and the 5K at 6:50. The site is Battleground Park on Rt. 33.

On Friday, July 19, there's the Friday Night 5K for Women. This year's event is going to be bigger and better than ever. We've added a 1-mile family fun run (open to men, women, boys and girls), so that more folks can enjoy the evening. A great post-race party is planned, with plenty of food and beverages. A DJ from the NY radio station 104.3 is coming down for the event, and there will be lots of prizes. The race goes off from the Marlboro Recreation Center, fun run at 6:30, 5K at 7 pm.

The next club meeting is August 22, which also happens to be a night with a full moon. Get into the spirit of things and join us after the meeting for a full moon run. We're going to skip the usual pre-meeting fun run at 7:30 to add the full moon run after the meeting (around 9:30). We'll be letting you know who the speaker will be for this special night.

The FARC picnic is in August this year, too. We're securing the date, so check the next newsletter or the website as the summer goes by. Last year we had a catered picnic, a band, a bake-off contest, and lots of games for the whole family. The picnic is free to FARC members. It's a great time.

Let us know what you're looking forward to race- or event-wise this summer. Hopefully it'll be all our events, and perhaps some others that have become personal favorites. And remember, the club is always looking for volunteers. So if you want to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes, or if you have some extra time to help out, we'd love to hear from you. Call the FARC hotline at 732-431-2627. You can also check out our website -- www.farcnj.com

-- or email the club at webmaster@farcnj.com.

Happy running!

SAVE THE DATE!

***** NEXT FARC MEETING AUGUST 22 *******

The next FARC General Membership Meeting is Thursday, August 22. It's a special night with a special twist. We'll be having a Full Moon Run after the meeting, and the speaker for the meeting is Joan Titsworth, the

Treasurer of the American Federation of Astrologers. Joan has studied astrology for 50 years. She has written 3 books on astrology, is a certified astrology teacher, and lectures frequently on astrology. She will be telling us all about the power of the moon and how to use the moon for better health and well-being. The meeting will start at 8 pm, with the Full Moon Run starting at 9:30 and going through the park. Come dressed to run! And even if you can't make the run, come out to hear Joan talk about the moon and other astrological matters.

See you there!

JERSEY SHORE RELAY

by Bob Waitt

On Saturday, April 20th 2002 some of the members of the Freehold Area Running Club gathered at the Aztec Hotel In Seaside, NJ for the start of the Jersey Shore Relay. The weather was warm and cloudy and several of us who had run the race before were looking forward to some pretty fast times. For those of you who have never run this event let me describe for you how it works.

Each team consists of 5 members, mixed or all one gender. You then select a category you will compete in i.e.: (club, masters, open, open mixed...). The teams then select a pace they feel most of their members will run and they are then sent off in staggered starts (The slowest first and the fastest last) so that all teams finish together at roughly the same time. Members run legs of the race that range from 4 - 6 miles for a grand team total of 26 miles. It is alot of fun and there are some great sights to see along the way as you run through the scenic shore towns of Seaside, Point Pleasant, Spring Lake, Belmar and Asbury. O.K. so Asbury doesn't look that great, but close your eyes it's the shortest leg any way at 4 miles and the cheering crowd will guide you home.

This year at my last count we entered 7 teams into the relay, which I believe is a new record for FARC. There were a total of 166 teams which competed in the event this year and the FARC teams finished in the following order: FARC Buds Elite was 13th at a time of 2:54:51, FARC 3 was 20th with a 3:09:12, Running Buds 2 was 36th with a time of 3:24:04, FARC 1 was 59th with a time of 3:36:33, Running Buds 3 was 90th with a 3:47:32, FARC 2 was 131st with a 4:00:42 and the Old FARCS had a 4:08: 56 and finished 149th.

The members of the teams are too long to list but let me say a few things about some of the individuals I had the privilege of running with on my team FARC 3. While I was the defacto captain of my team, (It seems Tom Dunsheath couldn't get his act together) Maggie Freeman was our ace in the hole and took us out at a blistering pace for the first 6 miles. She was followed up by the aforementioned Tom Dunsheath who continued to pour on the speed (Hey wasn't Tom supposed to organize all these teams?? Thanks Tom, you're running two legs next year). Perhaps it was Maggie's threat that if any of us slowed down she would get right on our heels to move us along. The baton was then passed to me who almost put the Maggie threat to the test. I handed off to Mike O' Connell who continued to lap earlier runners and pick up the pace (was it me or did he smell like raspberry spray??). Finally Mike handed off to the newest member of our club

Welcome to FARC - the club would like to welcome the following new members: Mike DeMarzo from Marlboro, Carrie Becker and family from Robbinsville, Christine Finke from Manalapan and the Price family (Jim, Jo Ann, Lianne and Ian) from Freehold.

Great Quote - "Babe Ruth made a big mistake when he gave up pitching", noted Tris Speaker in 1921.

Nutrition Quiz - with the warm weather here, how many cups of water (or other fluids) are needed to replace each pound of sweat lost while running:

  a) 150 mg/dl

  b) 200 mg/dl

  c) 250 gm/dl

  d) 300 mg/dl

Find the answer below.

RELAY FOR LIFE

Mike O'Connell

As I sat down to write this note for our newsletter, I pondered this very first line for a long time. I wanted to thank my fellow FARC members for their efforts and the success of the Relay For Life. But could I say it was a "success"? Cancer still exists and people ...young and old still suffer and pass. What word could I use?

Well, let me tell you this...in the first weekend in June roughly one hundred teams gathered at the Freehold Raceway Track. Makeshift villages of tents became home for walkers and yes us runners alike. I don't think anyone can tell you how many laps were traveled around the half mile track, but what was counted was the roughly $230,000.00 raised for the American Cancer Society. I would add that that number was the amount announced at Sunday's Closing Ceremony. Additional sums are still coming in. Yeah, that's a success.

Our FARC Team made another great showing. Like the event itself I am still collecting money, but as of this moment we raised $3,731.00. Thank you team. I will also add that at the June 5, 2002 Board Meeting the club agreed to add additional funds so that we as a club will reach the $4,000.00 mark.

Thank you Board. This act of kindness and generosity truly demonstrates the quality that is FARC.

For those of you who missed the event...you missed a lot. You could have seen me take a Charlie Brown like pratfall while charging over to see Busty, a contestant in the Miss Relay Contest. You would have seen Ed Daley on the grill serving up much needed burgers and chicken. Barry Seward was there in toga choking down that darn healthy water. Bobby "Sunshine" Waitt actually getting grumpy...thanks Judy...can you believe it! So many images and conversations and laughs that I can't include them all. So why not join us next year and be a part of the fun.

All of that aside, the true reason for our participation was clear. During the event we met cancer survivors and heard heroic stories of those who have won and sadly those who have lost the fight. As I've said before, we each know someone who is or was afflicted with cancer. Heck, several members of our club and team have lost loved ones, and yet other FARC members, like our friends on Team Raymond, brought their own contingencies. No matter what team FARC members were on and no matter what brought them there, we were all there for the American Cancer Society. So yes it was a success.

I hope to see more FARC members there next year. Until then you can always send a donation to ACS, or while I am still collecting FARC money, I will gladly pass along additional contributions. Every dollar counts! Good health and God's Blessings to you all.

CLUB KUDOS

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the entire staff of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program Emergency food Pantry, we would like to thank you for the donation received in March. The pantry has distributed food to approx. 970 people since the beginning of the year. Thanks to your contribution and those of other individuals and organizations we will continue to serve those less fortunate in our community. Thanks again for your generosity. We at the pantry are very thankful for our many faithful contributors. Sincerely, Jane Frotton Director

FARC,

Please accept my appreciation (and Telcordia Pioneers) for the 2001 Excellence Award. We're very grateful to have been supportive of the Toys for Tots race in the past years, and hope to continue to be supportive in the future. It's a wonderful race, with wonderful organizers, volunteers and wonderful runners. Keep up the good work!

Sincerely, Sin-Kuen Hawkins Telcordia Pioneers

Sunday Morning Reservoir Runs

With summer's hot and humid weather starting soon, the Sunday group run will be meeting at the Manasquan Reservoir at 8:00am. This time change will go into effect Sunday, June 16th so don't forget to reset your alarm.

13th Annual Friday 5K For Women

The 13th edition of the Friday 5K For Women will be held at the Marlboro Rec Center at 7:30 PM on July 19. Same course, plus the usual club member pre-race discount. This year we are adding a one mile fun run, open to anyone - females, males or otherwise. This event, which goes off at 7 PM, has been named the Marlboro 1 Mile Family Fun Run. It will traverse through the roads and trails at the Marlboro Municipal Complex. The entry fee for the fun run is only $5.

New York's only classic rock station, Q104.3 will provide live broadcasts on site, with DJ Ken Dashow and the Friday Rock and Roll Road Show. Many of you may remember Ken from his 17 years with a previous classic rock station, WNEW-FM. And don't forget the usual FARC post race party.

The event benefits the Sandra M. Glazer Foundation, which assists families with a parent or parents who have or are fighting cancer. This non-profit organization is named after Sandy, who succumbed to cancer herself. She was a beacon of hope and support for many afflicted with cancer, and her legacy continues to touch many lives. FARC is honored to support this noble cause.

Lakewood BlueClaws Game

Our next summer baseball outing is Friday, June 14, at the Lakewood BlueClaws. Tickets are only $8 each (the cost of a beer at Yankee Stadium). We have the same great seats that we had last year. Come join a group of your fellow running nuts. Don't hesitate, call Tom Wendel (732-804-3952) now before the tix sell out.

Nutrition Quiz Answer: (b) For each pound of sweat you lose while running you need to drink two cups of fluid to replace your fluid loss.

2002 WINNERS OF THE MATTHEW STUPOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

DAVID O'BRIEN, Raritan High School

CHRISTOPHER REED, Freehold Township High School

As you will see from the sketches that follow, we are pleased and honored to have David and Christopher as our scholarship recipients.

David, ranking 9th in his graduating class, is the son of Tom and Donna O'Brien. Tom has been a FARC board member and he, Donna, and David have been involved with the club for many years. In addition to working part-time at Sports Authority, David has been involved in any high school activities. He has lettered in marching band for four years, is a member and officer of the National Honor Society, the National Music Honor Society, and the National Drama Honor Society. He has placed first in forensic tournaments, Spanish competitions, and was voted most dedicated student in the concert band. He is also a member of the jazz band. In marching band he won the leadership award and was voted best brass player. He has been involved in production and acting ends of many school plays and musicals and serves as public relations/historian for the Drama Club and Tri-M. Throughout high school he has taken all the honors and AP courses available. David has run in a few local races and even has done a duathalon. We wish the David the best of luck as he begins his college career at the College of New Jersey.

Chris has lettered in varsity spring and winter track for four years and cross-country for three years. He has served as captain in all three sports this year. He also works part-time at Jersey Freeze. He has been named to the 3rd team in the Monmouth County Indoor 400 and the All-District winter and spring track teams. Christopher and the entire Freehold Township boys' track team have had a super year. Through April, he has the best shore performance of the year in the 400 hurdles (56.1) and, with the relay team, the sprint medley (3:30.2). The 4 x 400 relay team won their division at the Holmdel relays in April. In a meet with Middletown South, Chris tripled with wins in the 400 hurdles (57.5), the 800 (2:05), and the long jump (19-2 ½). This winter his 1600 indoor relay team broke the all-time Freehold Township High School record for the 1600 in a time of 3:38.21. Chris has been among the top finishers at many of our summer series races. We enjoy having him and all the young people compete in them. To quote from Chris's essay: " I think that the people are the secondary reason I attend FARC activities, next to the actual races of course." We wish Chris the best of luck as he continues his education at Rowan University.

SUMMER SERIES

The 20th Annual FARC Summer Series at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Business Route 33, Manalapan, begins on June 26th and will continue through August 7th. Kids' Races begin at 6:10 p.m. followed by mile and 1/2 mile runs. The 5K will begin at 6:45 p.m. On July 17th we'll have a modified trail run as was done in "days of yore". T- shirts will be given to all participants of that race and to Series' volunteers. July 31st will be a "Predicted Time" 5K. No timepieces are allowed for this event in which the winners are those who most closely predict their finish time. The series will conclude on August 7th with the Handicap 5K. Those with the slowest times start first, the fastest times, last - the idea being that everyone will finish at the same time. You must have run at least one summer race to be given a handicap. Entry fee is again $4.00, $2.00 for FARC members (this is a good time to renew your membership if you haven't done so for 2002), and $2.00 for the kids' races. We were going to "turn back the clock" as far as entry fees went, but we've never changed our fees over the 20 years. Awards will be given to the top overall and age group winners.

We always need lots of VOLUNTEERS for these races, so if you have not already volunteered to help, please call Carolyn Heuser, (732-780-7228), even if it's only for one of the races. Ed & Leslie Daley have once again offered their home and pool for a party after the June 26th race for all volunteers, so come to the Daleys on the 26th for subs and a swim.

We are asking all our runners to make sure they (and their cars) leave the park BEFORE 8 p.m. when the park closes. If someone is picking you up, make sure they arrive before 8 p.m. The rangers are salaried by the hour, and it will cost us $40 if we're not out of the park by then. We will make an effort to have all awards given out by 7:45 p.m.

We are again indebted to Crown Beer Distributors for their sponsorship. And we welcome Applebees of Tinton Falls as a new sponsor. Special thanks to club members Hank Bailey for contacting Crown and Meredith Miller for bringing Applebees on board. See you on June 26th.

Calendar of Events, 2002

MEMBER PROFILE - Jay Vodofsky, from Marlboro

I never ran until about started 7 years ago. Growing up in Brooklyn, I played most schoolyard games such as basketball, softball, stickball, handball and football, but I never ran. I started running 7 years ago for two basic reasons. One reason was that I have asthma and I thought that running would lessen the severity of my asthma. The second reason was that a close friend of mine is a runner and I wanted to be able to run with him, since we spend much of the summer weekends together in the Catskills.

I generally run 3 times a week and will run between 3 & 5 miles. I'm an attorney and am a partner in an investment management firm located in Manhattan and due to a long commute and long hours, I'm generally limited to a treadmill during the week and on the weekends I do my running outdoors. I like to do weight training, which I do at the gym on the nights that I'm on a treadmill, and on most Sunday mornings I'm part of a small group that goes mountain biking in some of the State Parks that have moderate level biking trails.

I almost exclusively run by myself, but when my daughter, Jessica, comes home from college, she and her younger sister, Rachel, will occasionally honor me with their presence. Last summer Jessica ran with me at the Wednesday night series of races at Battleground Park. We joined the Freehold Area Runners Club last summer as a means of finding out about the various races in the area. Each year we vacation in St. Martin over the Christmas break and almost every day, in the late afternoon, my daughters and I will go running.

My favorite race is the Monster 5K, which is held in Monticello, NY on the first Sunday of August. The course is extremely hilly, the participants are very competitive, and the setting gets your heart pumping. I ran the Born to Run race last year for the first time and enjoyed moving up to a 5 mile race.

I intend to continue running this race and hope to be able to improve on my time.

I enjoy running, as it has been a way for me to ease the stresses that come with my job, my commute and the periodic pressures from home. At the same time, it has helped lessen the effects of my asthma, while providing other healthy aspects to my life.

PICKING UP THE CHANGE - Update

Current Leaders: Tom Russell ($13.59), Fran Emanuel ($3.22), Avram Shapiro ($0.99), Jim Bergum ($0.89), and Janet Bergum ($0.31) are leading the pack in the Picking Up The Change program.

Tom Russell sent in the following message with his March "roadkill coins" report:

100 miles

49 pennies

  9 nickels

  9 dimes

13 quarters - total $4.59

Miles and coin pick-up dropped off the second half of the month after I strained my lower back hanging sheetrock on the ceiling of a bathroom we're renovating. Also it seems my unseen benefactor who dropped so many coins along "bus route" hasn't been back to replenish the loot.

HELLO FROM THE PRESIDENT

By Dominique De Vito

It's spring! Welcome back longer days and warmer weather - the ingredients for some great running. Not that we had a rough winter this year, but it's still a wonderful season. And just as the flowers and trees are bursting, so is the race calendar. There are lots of events for runners of all levels coming up in the next weeks and months. As you hit the roads and trails, remember to keep us posted on how you do. Share your results by emailing them to webmaster@farcnj.com or calling them into the hotline, 732- 431-2627. We'd also love to read about your races - write something up for the next newsletter! Some of you may be training for the New Jersey Shore Marathon on April 28. Say hello to fellow club members who will be manning a water station on the course, somewhere around mile 10. And good luck with the race!

No matter what you're training for, you can vary your workouts and your routine by joining FARCers on Sunday mornings at the Manasquan Reservoir, where you can log one or more 5-mile loops on excellent trails. Runners and race walkers meet at 8:30 and stay afterward if they want for light refreshments.

The Stockton Running Club has invited us to their neck of the woods to run with them on a Saturday morning then grab a bite afterward. New trails, new people, food? We're up for it!! We just have to decide on a date; it'll be some time in May. We'll know by the club meeting on May 1, and we'll post it on the website (www.farcnj.com <http://www.farcnj.com>). We hope you can join us!

And as former mayor of NYC Ed Koch liked to say, "How Am I Doing?" I laid out some goals for the club and myself in the last newsletter. Here's an update. For myself, I missed St. Paddy's - though I was ready for it - and I haven't gotten too many runs in since. Injury? Fortunately not! My husband and I adopted 3-year-old twin boys, so I'm now running after them til we get adjusted. I am still committed to 2 Hartshornes and 50 miles at the reservoir. Got that, boys? For the club, we did the April Fools Backwards run this past Sunday. It was a lot of fun! Membership numbers continue to climb - we'd sure like to see your new faces at meetings and if you want to volunteer. Eating, drinking and being merry isn't a problem - there was lots of food and beer at St. Paddy's, and our appetites are always ready for more. And our plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the summer series are cooking along. Read all about them in Carolyn's report in this newsletter. Now that I've bared all, tell me how you're doing with your goals. Email them to me at cddevito2@aol.com.

Happy running, one and all! See you soon.

SAVE THE DATE - CLUB MEETING WEDNESDAY, MAY 1

The FARC general membership meeting will be held at Michael J. Tighe Park (formerly Liberty Oak Park) on Wednesday, May 1 at 8 p.m. As the newsletter goes to press we are working on getting a speaker or activity. Come see what we manage to line up -- we're sure you'll be pleasantly surprised! We will also be announcing the winners of our scholarships, which is always moving.

We've got some very talented young people in the club. Sandwiches, snacks and refreshments are served at the meetings, as well. We'd love to see some new faces.

Fun Run (3 miles) - 7:30 p.m.

Membership meeting - 8:00 p.m.

MEET A NEW MEMBER

I am constantly amazed at how many members we have in the club, and I am embarrassed to say I know some of them very well and most of them not at all. I realize it's impossible to know all 750+ of you -- and for any of you to know all of the rest of us -- but we can start somewhere. Every newsletter we'll introduce you to some of the members. Next time you're at a race or function, say hello!

Lisa Herrick of Howell, NJ, joined the club after running in one of the Winter Series 5Ks in January. Lisa says she's been running seriously for just 7-8 months now, though she has been a casual jogger for much longer.

When Lisa gets serious, she means it: She ran the St. Paddy's 10-Mile (her first 10-mile race!) and has a half-marathon as a future goal. Right now she's training to be competitive at the 5-mile distance, and plans to do the Rumson 5M coming up.

Lisa found out about FARC online while searching for information on running. She enjoys getting the newsletter to find out about what other runners are up to and to scout out upcoming races and events. When I asked what her favorite thing is about running, she said she likes to be outdoors and that running is a great stress reliever for her. We hear you, Lisa!

To help train for long runs, Lisa is considering joining the early birds at the reservoir on Sunday mornings. She's also interested in exploring Battlefield Park -- Summer Series here we come.

Welcome, Lisa, and all new members. Happy Running!!

HILL LOVERS ALERT!!

Robert McGill sent in the following recommendations for group runs with this special note: Most of these suggestions involve running some very long and steep hills and/or mountains. If you go, let us know.

1. High Point State Park in Sussex County (near border with New York State and Pennsylvania).

2. Lake Mohawk in Sparta Township, Sussex County. It is approximately 8.3 miles around the lake. This course makes Indian Trails look flat. Guy Gordon and Laurie Parton do some of their training runs here.

3. Deer Path Park area in Readington Township, Hunterdon County. Some very steep hills nearby. The NJ USTAF has its cross-country championship races here.

4. Schooley's Mountain in Washington Township, Morris County. Excluding High Point, this is the highest point in New Jersey.

5. Mount Tabor in Parsippany and Denville. The church that owns all the land in Ocean Grove owns all the land in Mount Tabor. Mount Tabor is the location of the hilliest 5k in the State.

6. Watchung Reservation in Berkley Heights and Summit, Union County. Beautiful area with some very steep hills.

7. South Mountain Reservation in Essex County. It is a huge park with some areas with some steep hills. Or you could do some long runs along the top of some of the mountains.

8. The Great Swamp in Long Hill Township, Morris County and Bernards Township in Somerset County. It is beautiful scenery, but if you can, map a long flat run for several miles.

9. Holland Township in Hunterdon County - This is the site of the Windmill Classic 5k, one of the hilliest 5k's in the State. Approximately 1 to 2 miles east of the firehouse is a windmill. I believe it is one of the only windmills in the State.

ANOTHER RECORD FOR MADELYN NOE-SCHLENTZ!

Madelyn broke another American Master's age group record at the Raleigh Relays on March 29. She ran the 10,000 meters in 35:28.71 -- a full five seconds faster than the current record for the 40-44 age group. This record was set 20 years ago by Judy Fox of California (35:33.6). Noe-Schlentz not only beat a record, she beat her own flu symptoms which had been bothering her all week, and the heat and humidity of race day.

This record comes in addition to the masters records she set for the indoor mile (4:59.9) and the 3,000 meters (9:58.88).

Madelyn spoke about her training at the last FARC club meeting, where she joined her massage therapist Oscar Johnson to talk about how much massage has helped her.

Congratulations, Madelyn!!

TRENTON THUNDER TICKETS

Join your fellow FARC members for a fun night at the Trenton Thunder on Friday, May 3. For those of you who've never been to the Thunder, it's a great night of minor league baseball under the stars. The park has great food and beer, so come root, root, root for the home team along with other FARCers. Tickets are going fast. To reserve yours, call Tom Wendel at 732-780-5964.

CLUB MEETING MAY 1st - 8 pm, Michael J. Tighe Park. Fun run at 7:30. See you there! Come out and meet our 2002 scholarship winners!!!!

SUMMER SERIES

The 20th FARC SUMMER SERIES at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Business Route 33 in Manalapan, will start on Wednesday, June 26th and run through August 7th.

RECIPE CORNER

With the summer coming up soon and the emergence of fresh vegetables at the farm stands it's time to look at some healthy meals for runners.

Zucchini Pizza, which serves about 6-8 people:

Ingredients:

3 ½ Cups of Grated Zucchini (About 4 medium Zuchs)

2 eggs beaten

1/3 Cup of Flour

½ Cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 Cup grated Mozzarella

2 Tablespoons of Oregano

4 Tomatoes sliced

Olive oil

Pam spray

Salt & Pepper to taste

Wash, peel and grate Zucchini. Let stand 15 minutes and squeeze out excess water. Pre heat oven to 350. Combine zucchini, eggs, flour, Parmesan, ½ cup of the Mozzarella and a few shakes of salt and pepper. Spread mixture in a Pam coated 9"x13" pan and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the surface is firm and dry. Then brush olive oil on top and broil for 5 minutes. Put sliced tomatoes on top and sprinkle over that the remaining mozzarella and oregano and bake an additional 20 minutes at 350. Let cool slice and serve.

Multigrain Pancakes with Very Berry Syrup

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup whole-wheat flour

1/3 cup quick cooking oats

2 tablespoons yellow cornmeal

1-1/2 tablespoons sugar

1-1/2 teaspoons baking power

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 cup 1% milk

1/4 cup lemon lowfat yogurt

1-1/2 tablespoons canola oil

1 large egg

Syrup

2 cups mixes frozen whole unsweetened berries

2/3 cup pure maple syrup

Combine flours, oats, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon in a large bowl. In another bowl, whisk together milk, lemon yogurt, canola oil and egg. Add wet ingredients to dry; stir until just smooth.

Coat a nonstick skillet with cooking spray and place over medium heat. When skillet is hot, spoon 1/4 cup batter per pancake onto skillet. Turn pancakes when tops are covered with small bubbles. (Try not to turn pancakes more than once). Cook until both sides are golden brown.

To make the syrup, cook berries and syrup in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally for approximately 5-6 minutes or until berries are soft and the mixture is hot.

If you like pancakes, this recipe is worth the effort and these are great after a run!

The Importance of Whole Grains In Diet

Whole grains are a nutritional powerhouse for weight loss and general health. Although most diets advocate high protein and low carbs for weight loss, adding whole grains to your diet will help keep off the weight and make you feel full. Unrefined grains like brown rice, oatmeal and whole-wheat breads provide low-fat, low calorie options and are packed with vitamins and minerals to protect your health and have a good amount of disease-fighting phytochemicals. The following whole grains are essential for a healthy diet and can easily be found in the supermarket or health-food stores:

Brown Rice - Varieties include long and short grain, basmati, texmati. Good side dish instead of white potatoes. Use in rice pudding, stuffing, rice and bean salads, soups, and cooked cereal.

Barley - Look for pearled barley. Use in soups, for risotto, salads or any dish calling for converted rice.

Oats - Use in cooked cereals, baked goods. Even add to meat loaf for some added nutrients.

Buckwheat - Look for buckwheat flour to use in pancakes or crepes.

Whole Wheat - use whole-wheat flour instead of white flour in most recipes.

Use wheat germ on cereals to add a nutty flavor.

Look for whole wheat breads that list whole-wheat flour as a first ingredient, and DO NOT have partially hydrogenated oils as an ingredient. Most commercially prepared whole wheat breads have these trans-fat oils, which are very unhealthy.

If you do not already have one to two servings a day of whole grain products per day, incorporate them slowly into your diet to give your body and chance to adjust to the increase in fiber.

RELAY FOR LIFE

By Mike O'Connell

The Relay For Life is being held on June 1-2 and FARC is entering teams. It is a wonderful fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. It starts at around 1pm on Saturday and goes through around 8am Sunday. Last year I was successful in keeping two FARC members on the track at all times, although I ran a few late night shifts to keep up the slack. It's only FARC members, people run half hour legs, as many as you like. Members must raise a minimum of $100.00 in donations, which includes the persons entry fee, and they get a T-shirt.

I'm captaining the teams and people can call me (732) 280-5826 or Email me at moconnell@pringle-quinn.com with questions etc.

You can also find previous newsletters, a race calendar, articles sent in by the members, and great links to other running clubs. We are planning to set up a distribution list for the website to keep members up to date when there are changes to the site or we want to get a message out quickly to the members. If you would like to be on this list, please send your email address to webmaster@farcnj.com.

Frank Haviland was honored for the second year in a row, on January 18, 2002, at the Marriott Hotel in Somerset, by USAT&F as the 2001 Master/Submaster Athlete of the Year. Frank's year consisted of 6 National championships, 2 Indoors and 4 Outdoors, capping it off with a second place finish at the World championships in Brisbane, Australia. He also set American indoor and outdoor age group records in the 800 meters. The outdoor record was held for 21 years.

Sparta Frost Bite Trail Run

by Robert McGill

One of the most beautiful trail runs in New Jersey is the Sparta Frost Bite Trail Run in Station Park in Sparta Township. It is a 3-lap course. Most of the course is run over dirt and grass, with a part of the course being paved. You also run over a wooden bridge. This race was held on February 2, 2002. It was a weird run this year, because there was no snow on the ground. The past 2 years, you ran this race through the snow. All finishers receive a ribbon. After the race, there was rye bread, raisin bread, and water and apple juice. The cost of this race was $8.

If you never ran this race before, you should try it at least once. If there is no snow on the ground in the Freehold area, do not assume there will be no snow on this course. This race starts off a winter carnival in Sparta Township.

April 27, 2002, is the Sparta Downtown 5K, which runs by Station Park. I do not know if the course goes through Station Park. This will be a hilly 5k.

Some Math

by Ralph Garfield

Here is something to think about on training runs that will take your mind off the pain (or maybe not!). Send your solution to www.farcnj.com.

Problem 1:

Jack and Jill run a 4-mile race. Jack does 7-minute miles and Jill does 8-minute miles. When Jack crosses the finish line, how far behind is Jill? Derive a formula where the race is "m" miles and Jack and Jill run "s" and "t" minute miles, respectively (t>s).

Problem 2:

I thought of this problem while I was running the 10-mile race (St. Paddy's) race yesterday. Joan and Jill run a 6- mile relay race. Joan can run a mile in 5 minutes and Jill does a 7-minute mile. They arrange to hand over the baton at a point such that their running times are the same. How long does each run for? Generalize the result for a "d" mile relay where the two runners run at paces of "t" and "s" minute miles. Now generalize the result to three runners and then to "n" runners ("n" obviously an integer) For the three runner situation assume their mile times are 5,6,7.5 minutes and they each run for the same period of time. How long does each run? Assume that the total distance is 6 miles (the answer is a nice whole number).

CLUB KUDOS:

I just want to send out a thank you note and share a wonderful story from the 2002 St. Paddy's Day 5K run.

My two daughters and I have been training for the St. Paddy's Day 5K for a few months. Maddy (8) loves running in gym class and really wanted to do this with me, and Morgan (9) thought it would be fun to join us. However, Morgan woke up with congestion and a fever but didn't tell anyone and the cold weather wasn't helping. After seeing their father Gareth off on the 10 miler, the three of us started our race. Within the first 1/2 mile, I look over and Morgan is crying and gasping for breath. At this point Maddy is about 10 paces ahead. I have to stop with Morgan and without much thought, I yell to Maddy to keep going and I'll meet her at the finish. By the time Morgan catches her breath and pulls herself together, the crowd has gone and it is totally silent. There is not much we can do but walk to the finish line and wait for Maddy to finish. Now Maddy is a physically strong girl, but she is only 8 and has never been "alone". We wait and wait. Finally, at 32:10, here comes Maddy to the finish line with a group of women running with her. These kind women saw what had happened and took her under their wings and made sure that someone was running with her the whole time, even at the expense of their own goals for the race. Afterwards at the post-race refreshments, they stopped by to congratulate her. It was an experience that none of us will forget. It taught the girls many positive lessons about running and community and affirmed these values for Gareth and me. Thanks so much to these wonderful women and to the organizers of such a great event.

UPDATE - ERIN COYNE

Erin, one of last year's scholarship winners, finished 5th in the 3,000-meter run at the Dick Deschriver Track and Field Invitational hosted by her college, East Stroudsburg. She ran in 11:18:02 and was first among all East Stroudsburg runners. Congratulations, Erin!

NUTRITION QUIZ ANSWER

b) Saturated fat. For a label to state that a product is cholesterol-free, it must also be low in saturated fat. This is to prevent manufacturers from implying their cholesterol-free product is healthier even if it contains a lot of saturated fat. Saturated fat has been found to increase your blood cholesterol level more than dietary cholesterol.

PICKING UP THE CHANGE - Update

At the end of March, Tom Russell ($12.51), Fran Emanuel ($2.40), Avram Shapiro ($0.99) and Jim Bergum ($0.30) are leading the pack in the Picking Up The Change program.

Tom Russell sent in the following message with his February find of $4.97.

In February I extended my "prospecting runs" a couple of miles in either direction along the bus route road, for a total of 118 miles this month. This strategy worked: I found 22 pennies, 7 nickels, 9 dimes, 14 quarters, an EZPass transponder, and at least a dozen AA batteries (which I collect for recycling).

After scouring the bus route so thoroughly this month it may be a lean March. I found only a few cents on other runs.

FITNESS

Form Facts-

Our seasoned runners are well aware of proper body form when running, but some of our novice runners may find the following helpful:

As you run, strive for a natural stride and keep your torso erect, stabilizing your body with your abdominal muscles. Keep shoulders and hands relaxed (don't round shoulders), bend elbows at about 90 degrees and move forearms forward (piston motion), not pumping up and down which wastes energy. Let your foot roll heel-to-toe through its full range of motion, don't slap it down-go with your natural biomechanics.

A SPECIAL ST. PADDY'S

Marcia & Avram Shapiro

From the moment we realized that the St. Paddy's and Leprechaun races would fall out on St. Patrick's Day, we were prepared for either the best or the worst. We got the best. The best registration, a record 1,123 entries;the best beginning, an emotional rendition by Janis Ticky of the National Anthem; nearly the best weather, dry, 45-degree, cloudy and breezy; and the best finish, with a record 1,011 runners and walkers crossing the line.

We also have the best race committee. Working with us were Bud Fitch, Dave Friedman, Frank Haviland, Carolyn & Dick Heuser, Linda & Bob Hyer, Isabel Keeley, Jack Lucey, Walt Rutsky, Bo Saa, Barry Seward, Ed & Tom Wendel. They and their volunteers, despite the chilly conditions, superbly handled the preparations and the overflow crowd of athletes.

Considering the size of the field, the glitches (there will always be some) were remarkably few, and the club is in receipt of numerous compliments for the event.

The generosity of our sponsors, particularly Nestle and WindMill, who have been our stalwarts over the years, with additional support from newcomer A.G.Edwards & Sons and regulars CentraState Healthcare and Bob's Stores, allowed us to provide the amenities, which make these races increasingly popular, and the means to support a number of worthy causes in the community.

Organizational support from the Freehold Parks & Recreation staff (facilities), the Freehold Township Police and the Manalapan Police Explorers (course safety), the Freehold First Aid squad (thankfully, few customers), and the Scout troops (water stops), played an essential role in this year's outstanding success. And at the end, two massage therapy outfits, the Institute for Therapeutic Massage and Oscar Johnson, both were there to relax tired muscles.

Congratulations to all the winners, young (indeed!) and old, and to all who made it to the finish for their own personal victories. May we all meet here again next year!

Vol. 20 No. 1 01/02

Hello From the President

It's February already - the New Year is well underway, and hopefully your running is going splendidly. That's what it's all about, right? We're a club of runners. We love to talk about PRs and favorite courses. How we did this week versus last week. How many miles we put in - or didn't. What the next training challenge is -- whether it's recovering from an injury or building up the miles. Encouraging our family and friends to share the running bug with us, savoring the friendships we've made while running, and looking forward to making new friends on the roads and trails.

What are your running goals for 2002? Could this be the year you run a marathon? The year you combine your running with biking and/or swimming to do a biathlon or triathlon? The year you break 27 minutes in the 5K? The year you run more than twice a week? The year you take up running with your spouse?

I like setting goals for the New Year. Not resolutions. Those are made to be broken. But goals are good because when you reach them, you feel like you've accomplished something. My running goals for this year are to do the St. Paddy's 10-Mile, a half-marathon later in the spring, at least 2 of the Hartshorne Woods Trail runs (I love them!), and to log at least 50 miles at the Manasquan Reservoir with fellow FARCers. Maybe, just maybe, I'll train for a fall marathon.

As the new President of the Freehold Area Running Club, I have goals for our club, too. They are:

1.To keep running fun.

Hey, need I say more? This is an easy goal for FARC, I think, because as a club we tend to have fun. We try to have fun prizes that we award to lots of folks, fun food like chicken soup and donuts in the winter and ice pops in the summer, great camaraderie at the reservoir runs, and some of the best-attended big races in the county, like the St. Paddy's 10-Mile and the Friday 5K For Women (could it be the free beer after both these races?). This year we want to try more fun things, like an April Fool's backwards mile, a full moon run and a new moon run.

2.To increase membership participation.

Can you believe there are over 750 of us in FARC?? Chances aren't bad that the guy or gal in line next to you at Shop Rite is a FARC member or related to a FARC member. Go ahead, ask! Yeah, go for it! Well, there's power in numbers. There's encouragement, there's support, there's good ideas, there's networking, there's social activities, there's new running places to learn about, there's history in the making - there's as little or as much as you want, but you've got to help make it happen. When was the last time (or the first time) you came to a FARC members meeting? Come on, bring the whole family. There's a fun run before the meeting, a guest speaker to enlighten you about some aspect of health, and there's free food.

3.To eat, drink and be merry.

Speaking of food&ldots; Honestly, what better way to make a friend than to sweat out a race or training run with someone and then dig into a bagel and a juice, or a sub and a beer? Those reservoir runners have it all on us - they do this every week. And what do members of other clubs say about our annual awards dinner? That we know how to have fun. Congo lines, the electric slide, the time warp brigade, we do them all. Once we've put in our miles, of course.

4.To follow in the footsteps of the FARC greats.

The club is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its summer series this year!!!! As a relatively new member of the club (6 years in May), I am constantly amazed at what the founders and members have done and do all the time to keep this club "running" as it were. We've got a(nother) great executive board. If you don't already, get to know us and tell us if you think we're doing a good job - or not. That's what'll keep the club going in the long run.

May 2002 be your best year ever, whatever your goals. Happy trails.

RUNNERS FORUM

CLUB KUDOS:

To all of FARC and its officers, I would first like to say what a nice event, Saturday night's dinner, turned

out to be - first class, from start to finish. My table stared at me, as I consumed two huge plates of food. I was glad I never had a chance to eat, all day, as the food was terrific. I think I even outdid John M. , at the buffet line. Secondly, I want to thank FARC for selecting me as the club's "Runner Of The Year". I appreciate not only this great honor, but the great races FARC has allowed me to enjoy, over the years. Clubs like FARC have helped me to enjoy running, and all the great people associated with running, over all of these years.

Thank You,

Dave DeMonico

Thanks for the nice write-up and the pix of me on your race results section from Sunday's race. And having Dominique interview me afterwards was also very nice.

Your club members really made me feel like a celebrity of sorts. And I do hope that I can keep running every day for the next 5,000...and the 5,000 after that... and on and on.

Good job on the race. I've done your 10-miler three times in the past (most recently in 95) and look forward to doing some of your races again. I've also told many of my friends and fellow Clifton Roadrunners what a nice job you do (Doris Hafemann has also run some of your winter 5K's, and also enjoys them).

Thanks again, and keep up the good work!

Tom Allen

Celebrating 5,000 Days of Running

On January 27, 2002, the Freehold Area Running Club's Winter Series races had a special participant, Tom Allen. Tom came all the way to Michael J. Tighe Park to run that Sunday because he was looking for a special event at which to celebrate his 5,000th continuous day of running. Wow, 5,000 days in a row! That's nearly 14 years without missing a single day!! In fact, Tom remembers the last day he didn't run. It was May 20, 1988!!!

What's Tom's motivation? "I enjoy running," he said. He's learned to read his body and he doesn't get sick often. "It's easier to run every day than not," he explained. "Then you only have to make the decision to run once. If you don't make the decision you have to fight the demons all day. Once the decision is made, it's just a matter of when and how far." He was quick to point out that others have been running continuously for longer than he has, and that someone else he knows does a minimum of 4 miles on his daily runs. Tom's minimum is 2 miles. He's run in all kinds of weather, of course, and remembered one day when he and a friend laced up their shoes and ran in water as deep as the curb after a drenching rain. "Like everything in life," Tom said, "the excuse not to run is always legitimate." His daily decision to run eliminates the need for an excuse. Sounds simple, doesn't it?

Tom started running just before he turned 32. He was losing his job and wanted to get back into shape. His initial goal was to run a sub-6 mile. He's now 49 and has accomplished that and much more. Tom has raced distances of 500 meters to 50 miles. He's run over 400 races, several of them to commemorate one of his daily milestones. For example, he ran a 4000-meter race on his 4,000th day. On his 35th birthday he ran 35 miles in Brookdale Park (his favorite place to run). When he turned 38 he did 38 100-meter sprints, and on his 40th birthday he attempted a sub-40 10K.

As I write this, Tom's on his 5,007th day. Tom, we salute your dedication. Long may you run!!!

WAY TO GO, WALT!

Once again, Walt Rutsky put all the pieces together to stage 5 great Winter Series races on the Sundays of January 6, 13, 20, 27 and February 3. For those of us who come for the bountiful food, warmth and comfort of the indoors, and to see how we progress or regress over the 5K course from week to week, it's easy to take for granted all the hard work that goes into making these events as pleasant as they are. Walt and his team of volunteers -- including his wife, Kathy, who greets everyone with a donut and a smile; Isabelle O'Donovan-Keeley, who makes the best soup in Monmouth County; Terry Dunsheath, who brings the bagels and donuts every week and is always there with a helping hand or three; Marcia and Avram Shapiro, who sign everyone in; Bob and Linda Hyer, who coordinate behind the scenes; Tom Wendel, who works the clock; Jack Lucey, who helps with results; Mike O'Connell and Bob Waitt, who get the kids off and running with a big smiles every Sunday; and everyone who pitches in - deserve the hardiest of thank-yous and the biggest of hugs. Your spirit is infectious. No wonder the Winter Series is such a hit. Walt, does this mean you'll do it again next year??

SATURDAY MORNING RUNS: On the Road

Once a month on Saturday mornings, a group of FARC members are going "on the road" to run at different places in the area. The first run will be on February 16th. Everyone is invited! We will meet behind Barnes and Noble (corner of Highway 9 and 33) in Freehold at 7:30 am. We will then car pool to Princeton to run on the canal. After the run, we plan to stop for goodies!!

PICKING UP THE CHANGE - Update

At the end of January, Tom Russell ($2.95), Fran Emanuel ($0.84), and Jim Bergum ($0.20) are leading the pack in the Picking Up The Change program.

Every roadrunner has come across the stray penny, nickel or dime while running. And you really hit it big when you find that elusive quarter. Well, to give you incentive to pick up the change and maybe run a little further in pursuit of some change, FARC has developed a Road Change Program. From December 1st 2001 to December 1st 2002 we want you to pick up that money. At the end of the month e-mail your monthly finding to our web master at webmaster@farcnj.com where the running totals are kept. You can view the current totals by going to www.farcnj.com and going to the FARC EVENTS page. At the end of the year the person who accumulates the most road change will win a prize and everyone's cash accumulated will be used to purchase gifts that will be donated at the Toys For Tots race.

WEBSITE UPDATE

To keep up with what's happening in our club, visit the www.farcnj.com website. Check the Hot News when you get to the website.

MATTHEW STUPER MEMORIAL

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

**CLUB MEETING TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19**

Tuesday, February 19. Fun Run: 7:30. Meeting: 8:00. Location: Michael J. Tighe Park (formerly Liberty Oak Park). Come hear Certified Massage Therapist Oscar L. Johnson from The Body Spa.

GIRLS ON THE RUN NEED VOLUNTEERS

Our girls are still talking about the great experience they had at the Toys for Tots 5K in December. We are looking forward to having a few of our members join your St Paddy's Day race.

Our spring program starts April 8 and we desperately need volunteers to assist our coaches with the girls. Our tentative times are in Holmdel from 3:15 to 4:15, Mondays/Wednesdays, Marlboro Monday through

Thursday, 4-6, and Colts Neck, Tuesday/Thursday 4-5. We need commitments for only one day a week, two would be best but we can assign volunteers to one day as long as they can reliably be there every Monday from 4/8 to 6/12. If you are interested, contact Fran at Girlsontherun07751@yahoo.com

We're not looking for athletes - runners are good, but we need women passionate about working with young girls.

We appreciate your help as we get our girls up and running for the spring.

Nutrition Quiz Answer: (c) The baked beans contain 1 gram of fat. Although the plain mashed potatoes contain only a trace amount of fat, the gravy adds fat, for a total of 1.6 grams. The coleslaw contains 6 grams of fat and the biscuit contains 13 grams of fat. As a general rule of thumb, a gram of fat equates to about 9 calories of fat.
