Dave smiled and said very calmly that this was his 103rd. His running mate looked at him as if to say he needs to be more humble about his accomplishments. Dave just smiled and said "have a great run, fellows!"

Five hundred and thirty-five road racers competed in the 30th running of the
Jersey Shore Half Marathon presented by the Shore Athletic Club (SAC) with
the cooperation of the Freehold Area Running Club (FARC) and the Jersey
Shore Running Club (JSRC) on a sunny, breezy Sunday morning, October 6, with
temperatures in the high 60 degrees at Gateway National Recreation Area -
Sandy Hook.
Elias De Oliveira of Long Branch was the first to cross the finish line
located on the main road outside Parking Lot E, which was also the starting
area, at a racing time of 1:12:25 (I hour, 12 minutes and 25 seconds). "It
was fast and flat - not hot and I enjoyed the breeze," said today's champion
when asked to comment on the course and weather. He further informed that
his best time for the 13.1 mile half-marathon distance was in his native
Brazil in 1992 when he raced a 1:05:00.
Coming in a distant second, on this double-loop course, which goes to the
lighthouse area at the end of Sandy Hook, was Valerie Quinonez of Stamford,
CT, at 1:15:19. "I'm satisfied, because I was looking to beat a 1:16 time
to qualify for next year's New York Marathon," offered today's runner-up
when asked to comment on his racing time. "No way - when you try to catch
somebody like him (De Oliveira) you kill yourself," he further offered when
questioned if he attempted to close the gap with the leader.
Red Bank's Eric Escorgia, last year's champion of this event had to settle
for third place at 1:18:06, over four minutes slower than his 2001 time of
1:13:44. "I wasn't feeling very good today so I didn't give it my best
try," said Escorgia in comparing today's and last year's performance.
Lynann Lorenz, Apalachin, NY, was the event's women's champion, 21st place
overall, at 1:28:29 followed by Juliet Hershey 1:30:18, Secaucus, 29th
place, and third was Belmar's Heather Perrine at 1:31:43, good for 39th
place overall. "My PR (personal record) before this was 1:33:29," said the
elated women's champion, enjoying the four-minute improvement, when asked to
comment on her racing time. "I thought it was pretty good - I liked the
water stops with the cheering volunteers - it was very scenic, I liked the
way it went
into the woods," were Lorenz's observations of the course.
The top racewalk male finishers: Jack Lach 2:03:15, Marlboro; Erik Litt
2:08:19, Philadelphia, Richard Van Benthuysen 2:17:35. Top female racewalk
finishers: Sherry Brosnahan 2:16:35, Bridgewater; Joan Venslavsky 2:29:50,
Robbinsville; Phyllis-Wolf McDonagh 2:37:35, West Babylon.
William Koch, Neptune, president of the JSRC, was very pleased with his time
of 1:34:57 since he had arrived from Florida after midnight implying he
wasn't starting with a good night's sleep. He offered these comments: "This
is the best weather ever, and I love this course because you get to see the
other runners as you do the double loop."
At the starting line, Walter MacGowan, president of SAC, informed the racers
that there were four water stops and that there would be a digital clock at
each mile. He then introduced Elizabeth Flannely of Monmouth Beach and a
member of Red Bank's Monmouth Conservatory of Music who gave a fine
rendition of our Star-Spangled Banner. Phil Hinck, past president of JSRC,
and director of the recent 5-mile races in Spring Lake and Belmar was the
official starter and advised the competitors to make use of the water stops.
With Hinck's two-command start: "Ready, go! The racers were on their way.
Isabelle Keeley, race director, assisted by Bob Hyer, past president of FARC
and his daughter Lauren, presented awards of lighthouse replicas to the
aforementioned winners and age-group leaders at the Parking Lot E's
concession and rest room section, which served as the staging area. Special
Charlie Rooney sailboat replicas went to the top three winners. Rooney, late
mayor of Sea Bright, was a long-time member of SAC and a veteran
long-distance runner on the Shore area scene. Random prizes were offered and
Jack Lach, racewalk winner, won the grand prize of a mountain bike,
generosity of the JSRC. John Eddy and Jennifer Thien, both JSRC members,
were resposible for computer results.
"It was the largest number we've had here at the Hook. I'm so excited about
the excellent turnout and want to thank all the runners for their
support. I want to acknowledge the know-how cooperation we get from the
volunteers of the area clubs (SAC, FARC, JSRC). Compliments, too, to the 25
chairpeople of the organizing committee who did an outstanding job of food
preparation and distribution for the athletes," said the obviously proud and
satisfied director when asked for her summary observations.
